Starry Nights

It’s no secret that we are work horses here at Sara Bear. We sneak into the office for quiet moments on Saturdays or in the evening. We do this because we are passionate about what we are doing, both the inspiration (babies and parents) and the actual job (promoting and selling a product we know works). Each discovery and accomplishment is a thrill and there is really only one thing that can surpass it:

Unencumbered time with family.

Sometimes this means kids, but sometimes (insert wicked smile) it means husbands.

About a week ago Melissa took a trip, intended as a surprise, but let’s be real, when you wait as long as we do to get away, it’s tough to keep it a secret. They headed to the city, an easy train ride from our beautiful Adirondacks and at the same time, a world away.

We jaunted to NYC, part business and part husband’s birthday celebration. We left the kids behind, in the happy arms of Nancy (the best adopted aunt in the world) and my Dad, “Grandpop”.

Enjoying a room with a view that was exhilaratingly different than the deer, ducks and bunnies back home.

Indulging unapologetically in touristy things (three times!).

Before leaving they visited the World Trade Center site.

Few words were said, we simply watched, reflected and mourned. Seven years to the world, how unbelievably fragile and difficult to grasp.

It was the perfect taste of freedom, with decadent frivolity and grave reminders of how blessed we are. Thanks, New York City, for offering such a starry night and magical getaway!

Diaper Catty

You’d be surprised how often we get asked about whether our caddies can be used for pets. Just yesterday I took a call from a woman looking for a basket to strap to her bike to tote her dog in while she vacationed in the area. Sigh, what are you going to do?

Today we received an email from a woman who is currently expecting. Her mom gave her a caddy and shortly after bringing it home it became a more diaper catty than caddy.

That’s one lucky cat. Best wishes to the mom-to-be!

Do you have a caddy picture you want to share?

Ducks, Deer and Waterfalls.
Oh my!

After a late night thunderstorm, the day started with a female Mallard duck strutting purposefully through our yard, for what purpose we never did determine.

Later, as I headed out to work, I spied a mama deer and her two babies taking breakfast just past my house.

Behind the family breakfast, an Adirondack waterfall.

This is my every day. Lucky days, indeed

He’s Got the Goods

It’s been a veritable hive around here these past few days as we buzz about the office preparing for the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas.

There are samples to prepare, paperwork to organize and boxes to pack. We are so excited to put faces to the voices we hear making orders for SaraBear diaper caddies. We heard from Allison, our rep at Pregnancy & Newborn, who will be at the show. We’re pretty excited about the ad we have running in their huge September issue. And we’d be lying if we didn’t say that the idea of getting away, maybe even buying some new clothes in preparation for getting away, wasn’t a little bit of a treat.

However, there is always something, or someone, that makes us realize how good we’ve got it. Check out Nate, our unofficial SaraBear mascot.

Musing on a lost tooth

It seems like yesterday. The dog drooling and panting under the highchair, waiting for the half-chewed Zwieback toasts to fall to the floor. Which they surely did, one, two, three, another half, a few more crumbs, and finally just a ball of saliva and Gerber baby-food-product scarcely hitting the floor before being scarfed up by the dog.

“Honey, tell me, why am I buying these expensive teething crackers? They should label them dog treats”, I say to my husband. “Can’t we just use a Ritz?”

But I relish in the fun she’s having, exploring the abilities of her new-found teeth and solid food. Chomping and chewing and mushing. My baby girl, Sara, had gotten her first two teeth and I ran out to buy the crackers the very same day, eyeing the Gerber Graduates, jars of endless baby food and exciting things she’d soon be eating.

Time disappears, yet freezes too, when raising children. And one day while on vacation we spin down a water slide and realize our baby is now six and off with her cousins down the mega-tube ride, without us, and we’re left alone, afloat on the lazy river ride. While on vacation this past week, summer came for my daughter - she grew about two inches, learned how to do a somersault under water and lost two of her baby teeth.

Your beautiful baby smile, frozen in my memory forever. I love you.
