For the whole family

It’s no secret that those of us here at Hibernate support efforts to eradicate ignorance about postpartum depression. It has touched us personally and its ongoing existence and the knowledge that women are suffering alone is something that haunts us. This is why we are bringing you the latest update on the MOTHERS Act. PPD is not an issue with the momentum of awareness that breast cancer and heart disease have, though it can be every bit as devastating. PPD is not a a women’s issue, it is bigger than that. PPD casts a shadow over children, throws a pall over fathers, and ultimately robs families of harmony and hope.

For daughters bursting with promise…

And fathers filled with love…

For time in Mama’s lap…

Or a ride in Daddy’s arms…

To protect the wonder found with Mom…

We ask you to support the MOTHERS Act and make happily ever after a reality for all families.

Thumb Twiddling

Normally we might be doing a predictable post about the arrival of Friday and the start of a fun-filled weekend without work or worries, but today is simply one of those Fridays that we either weren’t ready for or are just unable to muster any excitement about. After a week of beautiful, spring-like weather the Adirondacks are shrouded in grey skies and misty air that isn’t quite rain, but is still too wet not to wear a coat. Rainy weather after so much spring is tough on the kids -
(and parents! We were hoping for a hike.)

We have an important shipment coming in soon, about which we are all incredibly excited. Something about a brilliant pink, reminiscent of hibiscus blossoms, adorned with whimsical hummingbirds just makes us feel like sandals and sun-dresses can’t be far off. Sigh, Fed Ex just alerted us to the fact that the package won’t arrive until Monday.

Add to that the on-again, off-again contractions hearkening the seemingly imminent, yet not-soon-enough arrival of one little girl and you have yourself an office full of people wishing Monday would just hurry up and get here and bring with it hummingbirds and little sisters.

Psst, that right there? That’s a belly button!

Matters of the Heart

(and conscience)

As parents we have to make decisions every day –

Organic vs regular
Work outside the home vs stay at home
On tv or at the park
Cry it out or attachment parenting

The best we can do is use the information we have at hand each day and try to make the right decision, knowing that if we have to, we can always alter course down the line. As a company we have to make equally challenging decisions on issues that test us as consumers, parents and citizens of the global community.

Recently the issue of the safety of products being used by babies and children has come under intense scrutiny. We have all watched in horror as case after case of unacceptable levels of various chemicals have been revealed in products that have been on shelves and in toy chests for months even years. Outrage. Shock. Anger. Guilt. The emotions are searing.

We are taking strides at Sarabear to ensure that we are doing our part to minimize risk and impact. Our packaging is made of recyclable cardboard with no twist-ties or excessive taping of ends. The typical plastic bag and cellophane wrap found on so many juvenile products is absent on our caddies. We opted not to encase our caddies in plastic, believing that the added packaging was an unnecessary piece that added waste, inconvenience and danger of harm. Our real-wood baskets contain cotton liners that are hand-washable.

These were all fairly simple decisions to make. Others have been harder and we are doing our best. Following the lead of several organizations, SaraBear is halting the production of PVC based handles on our caddies and converting to PU, polyurethane, an alternative to PVC that decreases environmental and health impacts. We will continue to work toward creating the safest product we can.

We hope to one day introduce an organic line of caddies and we will keep you apprised of our progress in that area.

News and Press

Periodically we’ll be sharing news with you about SaraBear Company and the people who work for us and with us. Today is a slow news day with the Adirondacks bringing yet more rain and snow. Kids are sleeping and colds are raging. We hope to have a much more exciting post in the future, perhaps about the ABC Kids Expo we’ll be attending in September or the arrival of a certain someone. Do come back so we can share!
